About Maui

Maui has four distinct surf coasts shaped by the same NW winter and S summer swell windows as Oahu, but with stronger trade winds funneled through the Pailolo and Alenuihaha channels. The North Shore from Pa'ia to Hookipa is the trade-side proving ground and the launching point for the outer reef Pe'ahi (Jaws). The West Side wraps cleaner long-period NW swell at Honolua Bay, Kapalua and the Lahaina reefs. The South Shore around Ma'alaea, Kihei and Makena runs on summer S/SW swell with NE trades blowing offshore, including Ma'alaea's freight-train right when it breaks. The Hana coast is exposed and trade-blown, ridden only on rare glass-off windows.
