About Taitung
Taitung is Taiwan's eastern gateway to world-class surf, where consistent Pacific swells wrap around the island's rugged coastline. This region spans three distinct areas—Hualien Coast, Taitung East, and Taitung South—offering six quality breaks that cater to different skill levels and preferences. Whether you're chasing point breaks or cruising beach breaks, Taitung delivers year-round opportunities with a distinctly local vibe away from Taiwan's crowded northern breaks.
The lineup here is diverse and accessible. Taitung East anchors the region with four spots mixing beach and point breaks, giving you flexibility depending on conditions and your mood. Taitung South offers focused point break sessions for those seeking shape and consistency, while Hualien Coast provides an alternative beach break option. The break types and variety mean you're rarely locked out—there's almost always somewhere firing.
Winter months from November through February are Taitung's prime season. January peaks with an average score of 53 and best scores reaching 84, while February mirrors this consistency. Waves average 1.4 to 1.5 meters during this window, and water temperatures hover around 24-25°C—cool enough to want a light wetsuit but warm enough for comfort. October marks the transitional sweet spot with an average score of 50, bigger average waves at 1.4 meters, and water still warm at 28.6°C. Summer (June through September) quiets considerably, with smaller waves around 0.8-1.1 meters and smaller average scores in the 44-46 range, though occasional swells still push the best score to 87-97 on good days.
Access is straightforward if you've got wheels or don't mind local transport. The region feels refreshingly uncrowded compared to Kenting or Hualien's western breaks, with a genuine surfer's community feel. Water temperatures range from a refreshing 24.5°C in January to a tropical 29.7°C in July, so year-round surfing is realistic with minimal gear.
Based on WeWave data, Taitung's sweet spot runs November through February, when average scores consistently hit 53 and reliable 1.4-1.5 meter waves pair with manageable wind around 2.2 m/s. October and March also perform solidly in the 50-51 average score range. If you're visiting summer, manage expectations—scores drop to 44-46 and waves shrink to 0.8-1.0 meters on average—but freak swells still produce best scores near 90 occasionally. This is consistent swell territory rather than a winter-dependent destination.
