About Taitung East

Taitung East is Taiwan's premier east coast surfing destination, where consistent Pacific swells meet a rugged coastline dotted with four excellent breaks. This corner of Taitung offers something for everyone, from mellow beach breaks perfect for learning to challenging point breaks that reward experienced surfers willing to push their limits. The region's exposed eastern face catches waves year-round, making it one of the most reliable surf zones on the island.

The area features a nice mix of break types. Donghe and Shanyuan are forgiving beach breaks ideal for beginners and intermediates looking to progress, with both breaks offering fun left and right-hand waves. Dulan steps things up with a more powerful intermediate to advanced beach break setup, while Jinzun's right-hand point break is a gem for those with solid skills who want to enjoy longer, more technical rides. Across all four spots, you'll experience moderate crowds around 3 out of 5, meaning you'll share waves without feeling overwhelmed.

Winter months from November through March are when Taitung East truly shines. January through March consistently deliver average scores in the 67-99 range, with waves averaging 1.2 to 1.4 meters. Water temperatures hover around 24-25°C during these months—cool enough to make a wetsuit comfortable but warm enough that you won't be shivering. The months of January and February offer the most balanced conditions, with best scores reaching into the high 80s and 90s. Summer brings warmer water temps climbing to 29-30°C, but wave heights drop to around 0.8-1.0 meters and scores dip to the low 60s, making it better suited for less demanding sessions.

Based on WeWave data, Taitung East peaks from November through March, with January and February representing the sweet spot for consistent, quality waves and excellent scores. The winter swell window is your golden opportunity to experience the area at its best. Summer months June through September see the smallest average waves and lowest scores, though water temperatures reach their warmest. Plan your trip for winter to maximize your time in the water, or visit summer if you're chasing warm water and don't mind smaller, gentler conditions.
