Nusa Lembongan is a small island off the southeast coast of Bali, accessible by a 30-minute fast boat from Sanur. The island and neighboring Nusa Ceningan offer several world-class reef breaks that work best on mid to large swells. Playgrounds, Lacerations, and Shipwrecks are the main breaks — all accessible by boat or paddling from shore depending on the spot and tide.
Playgrounds is the flagship wave — a right-hand reef break that produces long, workable walls with barrel sections on solid swells. It's consistent and handles a range of swell sizes. Lacerations is a fast, shallow left over sharp coral (named for obvious reasons). Shipwrecks is a mellower right that works on smaller swells and is accessible from shore. These are reef breaks over shallow coral — intermediate to advanced surfers only.
The lineup at Lembongan is significantly less crowded than Bali's main breaks. On a typical good day, expect 10-20 surfers at Playgrounds — far less than the 50+ you'd face at Uluwatu. The island's limited accommodation and boat-access nature keeps numbers down. However, day-trip boats from Bali bring surfers over on good swells, so mornings can be busier.
Water temperature is warm year-round (26-28°C). No wetsuit needed. The dry season (May-October) brings the most consistent swells and cleaner conditions with SE trade winds providing offshore at the south-facing breaks.
Lembongan has a relaxed island atmosphere — no cars, no traffic, just scooters and walking paths. The island is small enough to explore entirely on foot or by scooter. Accommodation ranges from simple beachside bungalows to luxury resorts. The snorkeling and diving around the island is exceptional, making it great for non-surfing travel companions.

Religion & Culture
Nusa Lembongan follows Balinese Hinduism, same as mainland Bali. Temples (pura) are scattered across the island, and daily ceremonies with offerings (canang sari) are part of life. The Lembongan Temple overlooking the sea is a significant sacred site. Step over offerings, never on them. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples.
Seaweed farming was the traditional livelihood before tourism. Some areas still have seaweed farms in the shallows — avoid surfing or boating through them. Nyepi (Day of Silence) applies on Lembongan too — no activity for 24 hours, no exceptions.
Getting There
Fast boats from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan take 25-35 minutes and cost 150-300k IDR one way. Multiple operators run daily services (Rocky Fast Cruises, Scoot Fast Cruises, etc.). Boats arrive at Jungutbatu or Mushroom Bay. From Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) to Sanur harbor is 25-30 minutes by taxi. Some fast boat operators offer hotel pickup from Bali.
On the island, everything is walkable or scooterable. No cars exist on Lembongan. Scooter rental is 80-100k IDR/day. A bridge connects Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan (accessible by scooter). Boats to surf breaks cost 100-200k IDR per person for a session.
Surf Shops & Infrastructure
Surf infrastructure on Lembongan is focused on boat access to breaks. Local boat operators at Jungutbatu provide transport to Playgrounds, Lacerations, and Shipwrecks (100-200k IDR/person). Board rentals are very limited on the island — bring your own. Basic wax and leashes can be found at a few shops. Ding repair is available but basic. No surf schools operate for reef breaks (these are intermediate+ waves), though Mushroom Bay has beginner lessons.
