Mentawai Surf Area

Mentawai Surf Trip Guide

The complete guide for traveling surfers

The Mentawai Islands sit 150km off the west coast of Sumatra and contain the highest concentration of world-class waves on Earth. Within a 50km stretch you'll find Macaronis, Lance's Right (HTs), Lance's Left, Telescopes, Rifles, Greenbush, and dozens of other reef breaks. Most are world-tour caliber. Australian surfers discovered the area in the early 1990s, and within a decade Mentawai went from secret to the most coveted surf trip on the planet.

The waves here are mechanical and consistent — Indian Ocean swells wrap around perfectly aligned reefs, producing long walls and barrel sections session after session. Macaronis is famous as the funnest wave in the world, a long mechanical left with endless turn sections. Lance's Right (HTs) is a freight-train barrel over shallow reef, one of the most photographed waves anywhere. Lance's Left, Greenbush, and Thunders are heavy, advanced-only slabs. Telescopes, Rifles, and Pitstops offer faster, walling rights. Beng Bengs, Nipussi, and Ebay provide more forgiving options.

Mentawai is not a budget destination. Most surfers come on charter boat trips (7-12 nights, $2,500-6,000 per person) or stay at land-based surf resorts ($250-800 per night). Charter boats follow the swell and wind, hitting different reefs each day. Land camps focus on a single area but offer better food and beds. Either way, you're paying for access to remote, near-empty waves. The lineup at most spots holds 10-25 surfers — full but not Bali-crowded.

Water temperature is warm year-round (27-29°C). No wetsuit needed. The surf season runs April through October, with the most consistent solid swells from May to September. The wet season (November-March) brings smaller, less consistent waves and more onshore wind.

The islands are culturally distinct from the Indonesian mainland — the indigenous Mentawai people maintain traditional villages inland, while the coast is mostly Minangkabau Muslim transplants from Sumatra. Infrastructure is limited: no ATMs at most spots, weak mobile signal, basic medical facilities. This is a destination for surfers who want quality waves above all else, not for travelers seeking comfort or convenience. Bring everything you need.

Accommodation Guide

Mentawai accommodation falls into two categories: charter boats and land-based resorts. Charter boats are floating surf camps that follow the swell — they hold 6-12 surfers and rotate between Macaronis, Lance's, Telescopes, and Playgrounds areas based on conditions. Trips are 7-12 nights and cost $2,500-6,000 per person all-inclusive. Land resorts are anchored to one area: Macaronis Resort sits next to Macaronis, HT's Resort overlooks Lance's Right, Kandui Resort is in the Playgrounds area, Aloita Resort and Nipussi Resort are on Sipura. Land options are easier on the body but lock you into local breaks. Most surfers do at least one charter trip and one land trip if they return. Both options book out 6-12 months in advance for peak season (June-August).

Religion & Culture

The coastal areas of Mentawai are mostly Muslim (Minangkabau ethnic group from Sumatra), while inland villages on Siberut Island maintain traditional Mentawai animist beliefs (Arat Sabulungan). You'll see mosques in coastal towns like Tua Pejat. The call to prayer happens five times daily but rarely affects surfers since most resorts and charter boats operate independently.

Dress modestly when visiting villages or local towns — cover shoulders and knees. Alcohol is generally available at resorts and on charter boats but rare elsewhere. During Ramadan (dates shift yearly), avoid eating in public during daylight in town. Charter boats and surf resorts continue normal operations. The traditional Mentawai people on Siberut have unique tattoos and shamanic traditions — visiting their villages requires guides and is usually arranged as a day trip from a resort.

Getting There

Getting to Mentawai is the hardest part of the trip. First fly to Padang (PDG / Minangkabau International Airport) — direct flights from Jakarta (1.5 hours), Kuala Lumpur (1.5 hours), and Singapore (2 hours). Then transfer to the islands by one of three options: (1) Mentawai Fast (fast ferry from Padang to Tua Pejat, ~3-4 hours, 350,000 IDR); (2) Speedboat charter (1.5-2 hours, expensive but flexible); (3) Susi Air small plane to Rokot Airstrip on Sipura (~30 min, weight-limited, weather-dependent).

Most charter boats and resorts include the Padang-island transfer in their package. If arranging independently, book ferry tickets in advance during peak season — they sell out. Padang has basic hotels for overnight stays since flights and ferries don't always connect on the same day. Allow at least one buffer day in your itinerary in case of weather delays.

Surf Shops & Infrastructure

Mentawai has minimal standalone surf infrastructure. There are essentially no surf shops on the islands. All boards, leashes, fins, wax, sunscreen, and repair kits must be brought from home or bought in Padang before departure. Charter boats and resorts carry basic spare leashes and fins for emergencies, plus ding repair kits. Surf guides are included in all charter and resort packages — solo guide hire is not really a market. If a board breaks badly, your trip may end early since replacement is impossible.

Safety & Dangers

Sharp Shallow Reef
All Mentawai breaks are over coral reef, often very shallow at low tide. Reef cuts are guaranteed if you surf long enough. Lance's Right and Greenbush are particularly hazardous.
Strong Currents
Channels and drifts are powerful. Leash failure can mean a long swim or boat pickup. Don't surf alone, and stay aware of your position.
Malaria & Dengue
Mentawai has malaria risk (chloroquine-resistant strain) and dengue fever. Take antimalarial medication before/during/after the trip. Use DEET repellent at dawn/dusk. Sleep under nets or in screened rooms.
Equatorial Sun
Long sessions at remote breaks mean extreme sun exposure. SPF50+ reef-safe sunscreen, rash guard, hat for boats. Reapply every 90 minutes.
Limited Medical Facilities
Nearest hospital is in Padang (3-4 hour boat away). Severe injuries require emergency evacuation. Travel insurance with medevac is mandatory. Bring first-aid supplies and antibiotics for reef cut infections.
Earthquakes & Tsunami
Mentawai sits on the Sunda megathrust — major quakes in 2010 caused tsunamis. Resorts have evacuation plans. Charter boats are usually safe at sea.
Weather Delays
Ferry and small plane transfers can be cancelled in rough weather. Build a buffer day into your trip on both ends.

Getting Around

DrivingNo need to drive in Mentawai. Charter boats and resort transfers handle all transport. There are some scooters in Tua Pejat but no rental market for visitors.
Car RentalNot applicable in Mentawai. In Padang, taxis are 75-150k IDR per ride.
OtherCharter boats or resort dinghies handle all surf transport. Ferries and speedboats connect Padang to the islands. Inter-island travel is by boat only.
