About Lombok
Lombok is a hidden gem in Indonesia's surf-rich archipelago, offering fourteen quality breaks spread across five distinct areas. Just east of Bali, this island has earned a loyal following among surfers seeking consistent waves and a laid-back vibe away from the tourist crowds. The variety here is impressive—from world-class reef breaks at Desert Point and Gerupuk to more accessible beach and point breaks around Kuta Lombok and Senggigi, there's something for every skill level.
The reef breaks dominate Lombok's lineup, particularly in Gerupuk's five spots and Ekas' two quality peaks, which demand respect and technical ability. Desert Point stands as the crown jewel, a legendary right-hand reef break that can hold substantial swells with incredible shape. Kuta Lombok offers more versatility with a mix of reef, beach, and point breaks, making it ideal for exploring different wave types in one location. These breaks thrive on consistent Indian Ocean swells and produce the kind of peeling waves that keep surfers coming back for more.
The best time to visit Lombok runs from November through April, when average monthly scores peak at 55 and the best individual days reach 98. During this period, water temperatures hover between 29°C and 30°C, making for comfortable sessions without a wetsuit. Waves average 1.0 to 1.1 meters, providing plenty of opportunity for varied conditions. The dry season also brings lighter winds (2.4 to 3.2 m/s), allowing cleaner, more shapely faces. If you're flexible, March and April offer particularly consistent scores with the warmest water temperatures.
Access to Lombok's breaks is straightforward—the island has good infrastructure with direct flights from Bali and reasonable roads connecting most spots. Gerupuk and Kuta Lombok tend to draw more surfers but remain far quieter than Bali's main breaks, while Desert Point and Ekas offer a more remote, adventurous experience for those willing to venture further. The local community is welcoming, and accommodations range from basic homestays to comfortable beachfront resorts.
Based on WeWave data, Lombok delivers highest-quality sessions from November through April, with January, February, and December achieving average scores of 54 to 55 and peak scores consistently reaching 96 to 98. This four-month window offers the most reliable conditions, warmest water at 29.4°C or higher, and the gentlest winds. The winter months (July through September) see slightly larger average wave heights around 1.2 meters but with stronger winds and cooler water, making the dry season the clear winner for most surfers.
