About Lombok
Lombok is an Indonesian island that's become a genuine gem for surfers seeking quality waves with fewer crowds than nearby Bali. The island hosts 14 distinct surf breaks spread across five distinct areas, each with its own character and appeal. Whether you're drawn to pristine reef passes or mellow beach breaks, Lombok delivers consistent conditions that keep surfers coming back year after year.
The island's most celebrated breaks are concentrated in Gerupuk and Kuta Lombok, which together offer ten reef and point breaks that handle swells beautifully. Desert Point stands out as a legendary left-hand reef break that peels off in long, powerful lines when conditions align. Ekas offers more secluded reef options for those willing to venture off the beaten path, while Senggigi provides a gentler introduction with its beach break setup. Most breaks here work best with dedicated swell windows, though the reef passes are particularly forgiving and user-friendly.
The sweet spot for surfing Lombok runs from November through April, when average scores peak between 68-70 and water temperatures hover around 29-30°C—warmth that means you can surf in boardshorts all day. January and February deliver consistent conditions with average waves around 1.1 meters and lighter winds at 3.2-3.3 m/s, creating ideal cruising and learning conditions. The dry season brings reliable swells and clear skies, making these months perfect for travel planning. Winter months (July-August) see slightly larger waves averaging 1.2 meters but stronger winds that can chop up the faces, though scores still sit respectable at 61-62.
Lombok remains refreshingly uncrowded compared to Bali, with easy access via Lombok International Airport and straightforward transport to coastal break areas. The local vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with simple guesthouses and warungs serving excellent fresh seafood at budget prices. Most breaks are accessible by motorbike or arranged transportation, and the laid-back atmosphere means you'll often find empty peaks even during peak season.
Based on WeWave data, Lombok delivers its most consistent performance from November through April, with November and December showing peak average scores of 69-70 and best-case scores reaching 99. Summer months (July-September) experience the strongest winds at 4.2-5.0 m/s and slightly larger swells, making them ideal if you prefer bigger, windier conditions. Year-round water temperatures range from 27.1°C in August to nearly 30°C in December, ensuring comfortable surfing regardless of season.
