About West Bali
West Bali is a quieter, more mellow alternative to the island's crowded southern breaks. Home to five distinct spots spread along a dramatic coastline of black sand beaches and rugged cliffs, this region offers something for intermediate surfers looking to progress without the masses. The area has a laid-back vibe — you'll find local warungs and simple accommodations rather than resort sprawl, making it feel refreshingly authentic compared to Uluwatu or Canggu.
The lineup here is diverse. Medewi is the star, a peeling left-hand point break that can hold decent shape across a range of swell sizes, though it does see moderate crowds. For solitude seekers, Pulukan, Rambut Siwi, Truck Stops, and Yeh Sumbul are relatively quiet cobblestone and beach breaks that reward exploration. Rambut Siwi is the standout for advanced surfers — a proper reef break with punch and power. Most breaks favor lefts, though Truck Stops throws in some rights as well. The cobblestone setups create consistent, workable shape when swell is present, and water temperatures hover around 28-30°C year-round, so a thin rashguard is all you need.
Access is straightforward via the coastal road; many spots are drivable or a short walk from parking. The real draw is the lack of crowds — most spots sit at just 1/5 crowdedness, giving you genuine elbow room even on good days.
Based on WeWave data, West Bali performs most consistently from July through October, with average scores peaking at 61 in both September and October, and best daily scores reaching 98. August offers slightly larger waves at 0.9m with steadier winds, though water temps cool to 27-28°C. The shoulder months of March through April also produce solid scores around 59-60 with calm conditions. From May onward, expect winds to build gradually, reaching 3.1m/s in July, before easing again by November. Winter (December-February) stays small and inconsistent but remains warm and moldable for practice sessions.
