About Tabanan

Tabanan is Bali's best-kept secret for intermediate to advanced surfers seeking quality waves without the crowds that plague the island's famous breaks. Located on the west side of the island, this region offers eleven distinct spots spread across coastal villages, each with its own character and lineup. Whether you're chasing reef breaks, beach breaks, or the unique cobblestone setup at Soka, Tabanan delivers consistent quality with surprisingly mellow vibes. This is where you come when you want to actually practice your moves instead of playing bumper cars in the lineup.

The variety here is exceptional. Balian stands out as a reliable point break offering long, peeling waves perfect for practicing your footwork, while Tanah Lot presents a challenging reef break for those ready to step up their game. Most of the region breaks on both sides, with spots like Cemagi, Kedungu, and Yeh Gangga offering forgiving beach break conditions. The less-known gems — Kelating, Nyanyi, Pasut, and Pig Stone — consistently check in with crowd ratings of just 1/5, meaning you might have entire sections of beach to yourself. Mengening's left-hand reef break adds another dimension for those hunting specific wave shapes.

The waves stay remarkably consistent year-round, hovering around 1.2 to 1.4 meters on average. September and October pulse slightly stronger at 1.3 meters with excellent scoring conditions (71 and 70 respectively), while the dry season from June through August brings the largest swells at 1.3-1.4 meters alongside moderate winds. Water temperatures range from a warm 30°C in December to a cool 27.9°C in August, so even during the coolest months, you're still enjoying tropical conditions. Access is straightforward with various entry points throughout the region, and the low crowd numbers mean you'll rarely feel squeezed out, even at the more popular spots.

Based on WeWave data, Tabanan maintains consistent quality across the entire year with average scores hovering between 66 and 71. September emerges as the prime month with a peak score of 71 and reliable 1.3-meter waves, while August offers the largest average swell at 1.4 meters alongside excellent conditions. Even the quieter months like May achieve respectable averages, making Tabanan a genuinely goofy-free zone where you can score clean waves and keep your stoke alive regardless of season.
