About East Side
East Side is Oahu's crown jewel for serious surfers, a rugged stretch of coastline where consistent reef breaks and powerful beach breaks deliver world-class waves. This region hosts five distinct breaks across a relatively compact area, each with its own character and appeal. Whether you're looking to progress as an intermediate or push your limits as an advanced rider, East Side offers the perfect lineup for your skill level.
The breaks here span from beginner-friendly beach breaks to expert-only reef challenges. Bellows provides an excellent entry point with its forgiving beach break action suitable for beginners and intermediates, while Sandy Beach commands respect from advanced and expert surfers with its hollow, powerful tubes. In between, you'll find Generals, Goat Island, and Makapuu—all quality reef breaks that offer both left and right-hand waves for riders with solid intermediate to advanced skills. The variety means you can choose your challenge based on conditions and confidence on any given day.
East Side shines brightest during the cooler winter months from December through February, when average scores peak in the mid-40s and the best sessions crack into the high 90s. January delivers the sweetest combination with an average score of 44, consistent 1.0-meter waves, and water temperatures holding steady at 25°C. Spring months maintain solid conditions through May, while summer (June through August) trends quieter with smaller average waves around 0.8 meters, though you'll enjoy warmer water temperatures reaching 26°C or higher.
Access is straightforward, and the moderate crowd rating of 3 out of 5 keeps conditions manageable without feeling overcrowded. The vibe here is authentic and local—not the tourist-heavy atmosphere of other Oahu breaks. The tradeoffs are worth it: reliable waves, consistent performance, and a genuine connection to the island's surfing culture. Bring respect, solid skills, and realistic expectations about the reef hazards, especially at breaks like Makapuu.
Based on WeWave data, East Side performs most reliably from December through May, with January hitting peak form at 44 average score and best scores reaching 98. The region maintains quality through spring, gradually declining through summer before recovering in fall. Water temperatures range from a cool 24.4°C in March to a pleasant 26.8°C in September and October, making winter slightly more challenging but offering the most powerful, consistent swell for progression and performance.
